Valladolid is a city for eating very well. Yucatecan cuisine is one of the richest in Mexico, and here you find it in its most authentic form. This is not a list pulled from TripAdvisor — these are the places where we actually eat and where we take our guests when they ask for recommendations.
What You MUST Try in Valladolid
Before the restaurants, get to know the essential dishes:
- Longaniza de Valladolid: spiced sausage unique to this city, grilled over charcoal
- Cochinita pibil: pork marinated in achiote, slow-cooked underground in banana leaf
- Papadzules: egg tacos bathed in pumpkin seed sauce
- Sopa de lima: chicken broth with Yucatecan lime and crispy tortilla chips
- Panuchos: fried tortilla stuffed with beans, topped with turkey, pickled onion and avocado
- Marquesita: crispy crepe with Edam cheese and Nutella (the quintessential street dessert)
Municipal Market — The Must-Do Experience
Type: Traditional market | Price: $50-100 MXN per meal
The market is where real Valladolid eats. Arrive early (between 7 and 9 AM) for breakfast and try huevos motulenos, cochinita pibil fresh from the underground oven, or turkey panuchos. The women running the stalls have been cooking the same family recipes for decades. It is the best food at the best prices.
Longaniza at the Main Park
Type: Street stall | Price: $70-120 MXN
On the benches facing San Servacio church you will find grilled longaniza stalls. Order it with tortillas, pickled onion and salsa. It is the most authentic experience you can have: eating longaniza while watching life go by in Valladolid's center.
Calzada de los Frailes Restaurants
The Calzada has several restaurants with beautiful colonial courtyards. The food tends to be Yucatecan with contemporary touches and prices are moderate. Look for the ones with a daily menu: they tend to be the best value for money.
Artisanal Ice Cream Shops
Valladolid has ice cream shops with flavors you will not find anywhere else: mamey, pitahaya, chaya with lime, soursop, coconut with xtabentun (local liqueur). There are several on the Calzada de los Frailes and around the main park.
Marquesitas at Night
When night falls, marquesita carts appear at the main park. Watching them being prepared on the griddle, crispy and filled with melted Edam cheese and Nutella, is a show in itself. They cost between $30-50 MXN and are the perfect way to end the day.
Food Tips
- Have breakfast at the market: more authentic and cheaper than any restaurant
- Lunch between 1 and 3 PM: daily menus are the best option
- Dine light: panuchos and marquesitas at the park
- Try xtabentun: honey and anise liqueur, typical of Yucatan
- Chaya water: a green drink made from a Maya plant, refreshing and nutritious
Breakfast at Casa Xu'unan
Every morning at Casa Xu'unan we prepare a different homemade breakfast with ingredients from the local market: huevos motulenos, chilaquiles, corn bread, fresh fruit. It is not an impersonal buffet: it is home cooking, served in our tropical garden. It is the best way to start a day of gastronomic adventures in Valladolid.
